An active chamber musician, Mr. Abel and his wife of 28 years, Colette Grossman Abel, coached with members of Quartetto Italiano, the Tokyo, American, Borodin, Chillinghirian, Vermeer and Claremont Quartets, and the Beaux Arts Trio. They toured Germany, Italy and Spain with the St. Albans Quartet, to critical acclaim.  They perform with the Abel Family Quartet, which includes their two children, Benjamin (violin) and Clara (cello), both of whom are on the threshold of their own performing careers. As Visiting Artist at Kentucky Wesleyan College, he enjoys frequent recital collaborations with pianist Dr. Diane Earle. Together, they have explored much of the violin/piano literature, and have been invited to perform on chamber music series around the Midwest.

Mr. Abel has served as music director of the Wabash College Chamber Orchestra for the last 15 years, and was recently appointed music director of the St. Joseph’s College Orchestra.

Over the years, he has toured with and played backup for many popular legends, including Pavarotti, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, Henry Mancini, Sandi Patty, Julie Andrews, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, Page & Plant, and the Moody Blues.  He has also served as Concertmaster or Assistant Concertmaster for National Broadway Tours of musicals such as Sound of Music, The King & I, Titanic, Victor /Victoria, Jolson, and Evita.

In his spare time, he enjoys playing Hearts, Bid Euchre and Scrabble with his family, raising hybrid daylilies and tea roses, doing Sudokus, studying and writing poetry, and reading trashy novels.
